The Ever-Changing Light

  • 365-day access

The Ever-Changing Light mini workshop will guide you through a series of exercises to help you to paint the six most common lighting conditions of sunlight, overcast light, diffused light, moonlight, back and front light.

We will explore firsthand how the type of light being painted affects the value choices we make and answer the questions of how time of day affects the color of the light, how the change of seasons influences the light, and how the color of the sky influences some of our color choices.

Overview

With almost 3 hours of video instruction, this mini workshop we will be exploring light. We will look at various scenarios the landscape painter might encounter outdoors and look at why lighting is so important when deciding what to paint. I will show you what to consider in order to capture the 6 most common lighting conditions and demonstrate them for you. We will start out painting in value studies, as this is the key to communicating the affects of different light convincingly. For the second part of the workshop we will delve into both color and value.

The Value Ranges

Using a value scale, we can effectively simplify the painting process and paint any lighting condition we want. It is vital to understand that each condition has its own unique set of value ranges. I will show you how to approach this in my demonstrations in a clear and understandable way. We will look at and paint sun light, overcast light, diffused light, moon light, front light and back light.
