Painting Greens

  • 365-day access

We all know that Blue and Yellow make green, but there is so much more to think about when mixing green than that.

This mini workshop will take the guesswork out of mixing greens in your landscape paintings. With the help of color charts and video demos, you will explore the myriad of possibilities of how to work with this color that abounds in nature and tends to intimidate the plein air painter the most.

No one taught you this in Art School!

Intro & Exploring Greens

I've worked with a lot of students who either use a number of already tubed greens or they will simply mix yellow and blue in various combinations and call it green. In this section you'll be making up a color chart and begin to explore all the ways to think about making green.

The Value Steps

The last section delved into various ways to make green. In this section you will learn how to think about both value and color simultaneously. You will learn how to take orange, yellows and yellow green down in value towards black, while keeping the color true. I pretty much guarantee that no one ever taught you this in art school.

Painting Greens Demo

In this 53 minute demo, watch as I work in the studio form a photo reference to complete a painted sketch of the scene. This demo will give you a good understanding of my overall working methods and how I start with the big shape and color relationships and build up the painting from there.

Closing Thoughts

This handout expands on the information from the last section. Combined with the demo video, the two handouts offer up a ton of information to ponder and to put to good use. Armed with this knowledge, I encourage you to keep exploring and to get outside in nature to see and feel all the green possibilities!
